STM & LTM Encoding Flashcards
1
Q
What were the 4 lists participants could be allocated to?
A
- Acoustically similar (cat, can, cab)
- Acoustically dissimilar (pit, few, cow)
- Semantically similar (big, large)
- Semantically dissimilar (good, hot)
2
Q
What was the procedure of Baddeley’s study?
A
Pps given 12 sets of 5 words from their list, after each set they had to recall words in order. Either immediately (STM) or after timed delay (LTM)
3
Q
What were the findings?
A
- Have recalling immediately the most errors were made when words were acoustically similar
- When recalling after delay the most errors were made when words were semantically similar
4
Q
What were the conclusions?
A
- STM uses an acoustic code
- LTM uses a semantic code
5
Q
What are 3 evaluation points?
A
- Lacks ecological validity
- High internal validity
- Control of variables
