Stigmas Flashcards
Secondary deviation
The response of self and others to the public recognition - the label - of the difference (in primary deviation)
Discreditable stigma
A stigma that is not known about by the many people with whom the person with the stigma comes into contact with everyday. Only the person with the stigmatizing condition and a few close intimates will know about it.
Discrediting stigma
A stigma that cannot be hidden from other people because it is obvious and visible. People often respond to the condition rather than the person.
Felt stigma
The fear that one might be discriminated against or disadvantaged due to a particular condition
Primary deviation
A physical or social difference of an individual or group
Enacted stigma
The real experience of prejudice, discrimination and disadvantage as a result of a particular condition
Cultural relativism
Accepting that there are many beliefs about the world and that no one has the single right answer to the worlds problems
Cultural costume
The particular set of recipes the individuals or families of a community have to give meaning and shape to their experiences and to communicate these experiences through shared ceremonies, rituals and symbols
Cultural camouflage
When culture is invoked as a smokescreen to obscure individual states of mind or patterns of interaction in the family, the cultural costumes becomes cultural camouflage - culture is used as a way of drawing attention away from or even covering up other difficulties
Working misunderstanding
In order for work to happen, and happen well, we do not always have to understand perfectly what is happening across a culture - we should accept that it is not fully possible to understand another persons cultural beliefs
