Apathy
Lacking compassion and appearing to be indifferent to another person’s distress.
Sympathy
Feeling pity or sorrow for someone else’s misfortune and being overwhelmed by one’s own emotions.
Over identification
Refers to when a HP confuses a client’s personnel experiences with his own resulting in the HP responding as if he was experiencing the problem and becoming overwhelmed.
Over involved
Occurs when an HP over extends himself and tries to become too involved and takes on more than he can manage. This can eventually result in the patient being harmed rather then benefiting.
Burnout
Once a person has taken on more than he can manage, the person may become disinterested, angry, frustrated and may begin to lash out.
Listening
• Recognising the value of being able to talk and having someone listen. • Understand how hard it is to talk about things that are important. • Make space for people to say what they feel and think without interruption • Let people find their own words with which to talk and say things in their own time. • Concentrate on what is being said rather than on what you need to say or do. • Find a safe place to talk in.
Containment
The process of helping someone think through unbearable thoughts or feelings.
Blind spot
Our own personal issues/feelings.
Interview
Interviewing is a special type of interpersonal communication which is purposeful and serious usually involving questions and answers with the goal of sharing information for therapeutic outcomes.
Empathy
The ability to understand another person’s distress without either ignoring its significance or being overwhelmed by one’s own emotional response.
