Sticking Brakes Flashcards
How do you know you have sticking brakes? (4)
Retardation of the train
Smoke and odour
Observation of the brake cylinder gauges
Illuminated fault lights
What can cause sticking brakes?
Defective dump valve
Mechanical defects
What are some mechanical defects? (3)
Defective triple valve
Broken rigging or failed brake equipment
Blocked exhaust port on a BC
What does the dump valve do?
Ensure pressure reduction is created in the aux reservoirs so the triple valves can release therefore releasing the emy brake when the BP is charged
What pressure does the dump valve reduce the aux reservoir to?
425 west code
415 Knorr
When a full service air or emy brake app is made
How do you rectify sticking brakes in running?
Trip ep
Make full service air brake app then release
If rectified book as rectified in running
How do you rectify sticking brake while stationary?
Rapid succession of ep brake from release, step 7, release
Apply min power
Shut off and feel retardation
If it rolls freely continue in service book as rectified in running
What is the maximum amount of bogies you have isolated for revenue service?
1 on a 3 car train
2 on a 6 car
Can a Comeng run in service if both bogies are isolated on the lead or trailing motor?
No
What is the speed restriction for a train running with isolated bogies?
10kmh below track speed. This speed should not be less than 60 eg 40 stays 40 65 becomes 60 80 becomes 70
Cab trains with sticking brakes enter the loop?
No unless it has been rectified or isolated
