Commonest bacterial STI in the UK?
Chlamydia
Symptoms of Chlamydia?
Dysuria
Vaginal discharge
Irregular bleeding (IMB or PCB)
70% asymptomatic
Complications of Chlamydia infection?
PID Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome Tubal infertility Risk of ectopic pregnancy Reactive arthritis (especially in men)
Neonatal complications of chlamydia infection during pregnancy?
- Ophthalmia neonatorum (presents within 1st month of life) –> Tx: Erythromycin 50mg/kg
- Neonatal pneumonia (atypical)
Investigations for chlamydia?
[1st line] High vaginal swab –> For NAAT (Note: Chlamydia is hard to grow on media as obligate anaerobe)
[2nd line] First-pass urine
Treatment for chlamydia in both pregnancy and normal?
Normal:
1) Doxycycline 100mg BD for 7 days
Pregnancy:
1) Azithromycin 1 g orally for one day, then 500mg orally once daily for two days
