Sterilization and disinfection Flashcards
positive pressure vs. negative pressure
positive- air flows only from patient room to corridor (in to out)
negative- air flows from corridor in, not from patient room out ( highly infectious disease)
antiseptic
used only on skin disinfectant
autoclaving
moist heat of 121 Celsius, 15 psi, 15 will kill c. botulinum spores
sterilization
most important consideration is whether object to be sterilized is free of organic matter ( blood, fecal material, tissue)
Spore test
negative test ( Sterile)- successful! positive test ( not sterile)- pH of medium change due to growth of bacteria, acid growth
4 elements that can sterilize
Halogen- chlorine, iodine ( used well)
Aldehydes- sterilize well (glutoaldehyde or cidex)
ethylene oxide- gas that sterilize
peroxygens- strong oxidizer
good disinfections and chemical sterilizer
halogens: iodine and chlorine. prevents liquid from evaporating and decontamination of water
alcohol: kill bacteria and fungi, but not endospores and non enveloped viruses, not good for treating wounds since they cause coagulation of proteins
