Sterility Flashcards
Instruments such as scalpel blades, that
come into contact with the skin should not
be reused
Separate setups should be used for clean
and dirty portions of the procedure
When removing contents from the
autoclave, the STSR must not touch the
edge of the sterilizer with the instruments,
trays, gown or gloves
The inner edge of a heat-sealed peel pack
is considered the line between sterile and
nonsterile
The inside of paper
wrappers containing
linens or other sterile
items is considered
sterile except for a 1
inch perimeter around
the outside edge of
the wrapper
Sterile packages found in storage areas
for non sterile items must not be used
If a sterile package that is wrapped in a
pervious woven material drops to the floor
this can allow implosion of air into the
package
If a permeable drape covers a table or sterile
field and any liquid penetrates the drape
either from above or below, it is considered
contaminated
Sterile packages and drapes should be
stored on smooth, clean, dry surface
Unnecessary pressure should not be placed
on sterile packs to prevent forcing air out then
inward
Towel clips tip are considered
contaminated if it punctures any draping
material and should be left in place until
the end of surgery
The surgical gown is
considered sterile
from the waist to the
mid-chest line in front
and to 2 in above the
elbows
During gowning, a
separate sterile table
should be used
Members of the surgical team should sit
only when the entire surgical is performed
sitting down
Movement economy is preferred around O.R.
