Stems Cells Flashcards
To define stem cells, list it's key features, explain how they are formed, define adult cell, embryotic stem cells and plant stem cells and describe how they are formed.
List the 2 key features of stem cells
1.) They divide by a process known as mitosis to form more cells.
2.) They can differentiate into specialized cells like; nerve cells, blood cells, etc.
How are embryotic stem cells formed?
When the sperm cell meets the egg cell and fertilizes it. A zygote is formed, this zygote eventually splits by a process known as mitosis to form more cells. When this happens an embryotic cell is formed.
How are Adult cells formed ?
After the embryotic cell is formed the stem cells eventually become specialized and form what we know as, a baby. After the baby fully develops into n adult, majority of the stem cells have been specialized, so there is no longer a need for the body to produce them BUT in the bone marrow stem cells are produced. These stem cells have a condition though whereby it only specializes into blood cells.
How are plant stem cells formed?
Plant stem cells are formed on the meristems which are the growing parts of the plant (Roots and Shoots). As the plant grows these stem cells differentiate into the cells and the tissues the plant needs; e.g. root hair cells, xylem and phylum. palisade cells.
What are stem cells ?
Stem cells are types of cells that have the ability to differentiate and be specialized, These are cells that haven’t been given any specific task to perform.
