Cell Types and Structure Flashcards
We are going to be looking at the different types of cells and their organelles.
What is a cell?
A cell is the smallest unit of life that can reproduce independently.
List 5 organelles that both animal and plant cells have.
They both have:
- Cell membranes
- Nucleus
- Cytoplasm
- Mitochondria
- Ribosome
List 3 more organelles that the plant cell contains.
- Vacuole
- Cell wall
- Chloroplast (Chlorophyll)
What is the function of the cell wall?
To provide support and protection for the plant cell.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
This is where all the chemical reactions in a cell takes place
What is the function of chloroplast in a cell?
To carry out a process called photosynthesis.
What is the function of the nucleus in a cell?
Contains the genetic material of the cell.
What is the function of the Mitochondria?
The mitochondria acts as a power house for the cell
( Provides energy for the cell ).
What is the function of the Ribosome?
Site for protein synthesis
What is the function of a vacuole in a cell?
Contains the cell sap ( mixture of sugar, amino acids, salt and water)
Aside from the cell membrane, cytoplasm and ribosome. what other organelles do bacteria’s have?
They also have:
- A Nucleoid
- Plasmids
- Flagellum
What is a nucleoid?
Nucleoid also knows as circular DNA is a irregular shaped strand that contains almost all of the genetic material( genes needed to survive and reproduce ) in a prokaryotic cell.
What is the function of a flagellum in a prokaryotic cell?
Flagellums help the cell to swim and move about. It propels the cell.
What are plasmids?
These are tiny strand that contain extra genes.
