stem cells Flashcards
what is differentiation
the process of a cell becoming specialised
what is another word for a undifferentiated cell
stem cell
where are stem cells found
bone marrow
embryos
what stem cells can turn into any cell type
embryonic
what stem cells can only turn into certain cells eg-blood cells
adult stem cells
pros and cons of adult stem cells to cure disease
pros- avoids ethical issues, you can ask consent, your body won’t reject them
cons-found in small numbers around the body, painful operation needed, infection due to operation, can’t turn into every type of cell
how does a stem cell divide
by mitosis
pros and cons of embryonic stem cells to cure disease
pros-easy to collect/harvest, can differentiate into any type of cell, no surgery needed
cons- ethical issues(killing of life), can’t ask consent
where are stem cells found in plants
In the meristems
what can we use plant stem cells for
-to grow more plants of a rare species to prevent them becoming extinct
-to grow crops with better adaptations/features for survival- disease resistant farm crops
