cardiovascular disease Flashcards
what is coronary heart disease
arteries being blocked by layers of fatty material building up
what are the effects of coronary heart disease
arteries become narrow
blood flow is restricted
lack of O2 to heart
heart attack
what do stents do
they are inserted in arteries
they keep them open so blood can pass through
pros and cons of stents
pros- lower risk of heart attack, effective for a long time, quick recovery time
cons- risk of infection after surgery, surgery complications, bloodclots near the stent
what are statins
drugs that reduce the ‘bad’ cholesterol present in the blood stream- slows down the rate of fatty deposit forming
statin pros and cons
pros- reduce strokes, heart attacks and coronary heart disease, they can prevent other diseases
cons-they must be taken regularly(risk of forgetting), negative side effects(kidney failure), it isn’t an instant fix
