Stem Cells Flashcards
What are stem cells?
Stem cells is a cell before it has specialized. Stem cells have the potential to become any type of cell in your body
Where are stem cells in animals found?
In bone marrow and embryos
Why are stem cells found in bone marrow?
So that they can turn into blood cells
What is the use of stem cells when they are used for a patient?
The stem cells can then be used to grow new tissue or repair damaged organs.
What are embryonic stem cells ?
When stem cells form an early embryo that can differentiate into any cell
What is bone marrow?
A sponge like structure in the bones which support the bone and produce blood cells
What is meristems?
Cells that can turn into any type of cells during growth on a plant body
What do meristems do in plant stem cells?
Meristems clone almost extinct stem cells to protect them from extinction
What is an economic impact on stem cells in plants?
It gives us ways to produce large numbers of rare plants
What are some risks of adult stem cells?
it can carry out viruses which could infect patients
What are some concerns about embryonic stem cells?
It may cause cancer when they are treating people since the stem cells are dividing so rapidly that there is a chance that they could go out of control
Why do people think its wrong to use embryos to treat people?
They believe that the embryo is a potential human life and it is considered killing that potential life
What is therapeutic cloning?
Therapeutic cloning is when embroidery stem cells are taken away from an embryo with the same genes as a patient. The embryonic cells will not be rejected by the patient as they contain the same genetic material. This is used to treat patients
