Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration and occurs down a concentration gradient
What is a solvent?
The thing that the solute dissolves in
What is a solute?
The thing that dissolves
What is a solution?
When a solute is dissolved in a solvent
What is net movement?
The movement of particles in a substance from a high concentrated area to a low concentrated area
What is the rate of diffusion?
The bigger the difference in concentration between 2 areas, the faster diffusion will happen
What is the formula for net movement?
Net movement = particles moving in - particles moving out
What is a concentration gradient?
The difference between 2 areas of concentration
How does increasing the temperature affect the speed of diffusion?
Particles move faster -> diffusion is faster
How does increasing the concentration affect the speed of diffusion?
Gradient becomes steeper -> diffusion is faster
How does increasing the surface area affect the speed of diffusion?
More substances are allowed to diffuse in -> diffusion is faster
How does the distance affect the speed of diffusion?
Less distance for particles to travel -> diffusion is faster
How is the alveoli adapted for diffusion?
The alveoli are filled with oxygen molecules which come there when you breathe in. The alveoli is also surrounded by capillary which carry carbon dioxide molecules which then diffuse into the alveoli and the oxygen molecules that are in the alveoli diffuse into the capillary so when you breathe out carbon dioxide comes out
How are your kidneys adapted for diffusion?
Your kidneys are filled with veins which carry dirty blood which is then diffused into the kidneys and the clean blood that is originally found in the kidneys is diffused into the veins. This is how blood is cleaned
