Growth And Differentiation Flashcards
What is differentiation?
The process where a cell becomes specialized to its function. Differentiation is important in multicellular organisms because they are able to perform a specialized function in the body
What happens in the differentiation of an animal cell?
Baby animal cells become specialized at a very early age. When the baby animal cell is born, some of their genes have been switched on and some have been switched off due to the need of those genes. Growth stops when the animal is mature
Where are undifferentiated animal cells found?
In embryos and bone marrow
What happens in the differentiation of an plant cell?
Plant cells are able to differentiate and keep growing all throughout their lives. They are able to re-differentiate at any time in their lives
Where are undifferentiated plant cells found?
In the roots because osmosis happens there and makes the cell grow instead of differentiating
How do muscle cells divide?
By mitosis, the cells duplicate
How do red blood cells cells divide?
Red blood cells cannot be recreated so when they die, they get replaced with adult stem cells
How do nerve cells divide?
When a nerve cell gets damaged or dies it cannot be recreated or replaced. It is dead!
What is an adult stem cell?
It is responsible for replacing damaged or dead differentiated cells
