Cell Division Flashcards
What is DNA?
double helix structured molecule that stores genetic material
What are genes?
Small packets of information that controls characteristics in your body
What are chromosomes?
Tightly packed genes
How many chromosomes does a human have?
46 chromosomes in total. 23 from the mother and 23 from the father
Why do we need to make new cells?
So our bodies can grow and develop
What is cell division?
A 3 step process which results in 2 identical daughter cells
Why is interphase the longest step?
it is the stage during which all the preparation for cell division takes place
What happens in interphase?
Replication of DNA to form two copies of each chromosomes and sub- cellular structures (mitochondria, chloroplasts)
What happens in mitosis?
One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the dividing cell and the nucleus divides
What does mitosis produce?
Any cell exept gametes
What happens in the last stage of cell division?
Cytoplasm and cell membrane divides creating 2 identical daughter cells
What is meiosis?
Meiosis is a process in which gametes can be produced and were 4 daughter cells get created which are all genetically different
