Q

Relationship of bank angle, load factor, and stall speed

A
  • as bank angle increases, load factor and stall speed both increase
  • beyond 45 degrees, load factor increases substantially
  • stall speed increases in proportion to the square root of the load factor
  • ex. 50 knots in 3g turn will stall at 85 knots

Q

Overbanking tendency

A
  • due to the fact the outside wing travels a longer radius than the inside wing
  • both wings complete the turn at the same amount of time which means the outside wing is also traveling faster than the inside wing
  • And because it’s traveling faster it’s also creating more lift so the counter – you need to add aileron in the opposite direction
  • And with the addition of more left you also get more drag which causes a slight slip in the turn which is corrected by rudder

Q

Torque effect in left and right turns

A
  • Newton’s 3rd law
  • in a turn torque effect increases with power
  • during a left turn, torque effect encourages the turn, torque effect plus the other turning tendencies can lead to a skidding turn, countered by increased right rudder
  • during a right turn, torque effect discourages the turn, can lead to a slipping turn, countered by right rudder
