Steep Spiral Flashcards

1
Q

Purpose and relation to emergency landing

A
  • develop division of attention, coordination, and energy management while dealing with changing altitudes, pitch, and bank while maintaining a constant distance around a point
  • also has a practical application, able to lose altitude while staying over a selected point for landing in an emergency situation

Q

Selection of an entry altitude

A
  • manuever should be completed prior to reach 1500 AGL

- triple approximate altitude lost per turn and add 1500 ft to find entry altitude

3
Q

Entry airspeed and power setting

A
  • airspeed = cruise, around 105 knots, want to maintain around 85 knots during manuever
  • power setting = power comes to idle just before beginning maneuver
  • enter on the downwind

Q

Division of attention and planning

A
  • majority should be spent looking outside

- look inside to check airspeed, coordination, bank angle, etc

6
Q

Coordination of flight controls

A
  • important to maintain coordination throughout the entire maneuver bc we are at a reduced power setting, so uncoordinated flight leads to decreased performance and mushy controls

Q

Maintenance of constant radius

A
  • just like turns around a point

- higher GS = higher bank

Q

Maintenance of constant airspeed

A
  • pitch for airspeed

- trim can help hold pitch

9
Q

CE, Improper pitch, bank, yaw, and power coordination during entry or completion

A
  • initital bank will be steepest due to highest GS

- we take power out at beginning or maneuver = add power back at the end of manuever

Q

CE, Improper planning and lack of maintenance of constant airspeed and radius

A
  • not choosing correct entry altitude

- higher GS = higher bank, changing GS throughout maneuver = changing bank

Q

CE, Failure to stay orientated to the number of turns and the rollout heading.

A
  • maintaing SA by choosing prominent visual landmark as well as noting Heading indicator in airplane, roads make this easy
