Staying Healthy Flashcards
What is genetic inheritance?
When people inherit the genes for a particular disease from their parent
What are non-infectious diseases caused by?
Poor diet e.g lack of vitamin c causes scurvy and organ malfunction e.g the pancreas stops producing insulin which causes diabetes
Ways to reduce getting cancer?
Don’t smoke and avoid getting sunburnt
When cancerous cells divide in a uncontrolled way forming lumps what are they called?
Tumours
A tumour that grows in one place is?
Benign
If cells break off and secondary tumours start to grow in other parts what is it called?
Malignant
What are infectious diseases caused by?
Pathogens which are microorganisms which attack and invade the body
What is malaria caused by?
Protozoan
What is a host?
Where the vector lives
What are parasites?
Organisms that live off other organisms
How can you control the vector ( mosquito)?
Sleeping under mosquito nets and using insect repellent
What are the defences the body has to stop pathogens getting in?
Skins acts as a barrier against microorganisms and the blood clots in wounds to prevent microorganisms from entering the bloodstream
If pathogens enter the body what happens?
White blood cells start fighting the invasion
What are the white blood cells which deal with pathogens in different ways?
By engulfing and digesting pathogens they find in the bloodstream and making antibodies to attack pathogens.
What happens when the White blood cells make antibodies?
They recognise antigens on the surface of the pathogen and produce antibodies which lock on to the antigens, killing the pathogen
