Fitness and Health Flashcards
How does the heart pump blood around the body?
The heart releases to fill with blood and contracts to sneeze the blood out into the arteries
What does your circulatory system do?
Carries oxygen and glucose in your blood to all your body’s cells so that energy can be released through aerobic respiration
What is blood pressure?
Measure of the force of blood per unit area as it slows through the arteries
What is blood pressure measured in?
Mm hg = millimetres of mercury
What is systolic blood pressure?
The pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts e.g when blood pressure is at its highest
What is diastolic blood pressure?
Is the pressure in your arteries where your heart relaxes
How can you reduce high blood pressure?
Regular aerobic exercise to strengthen your heart and a healthy diet
What can lead to high blood pressure?
Excess weight, high stress levels and excess alcohol
Why is high blood pressure dangerous?
The blood vessels can weaken and eventually burst which in the brain can lead to brain damage or a stroke
What is low blood pressure?
When the blood doesn’t circulate efficiently so some parts of the body are deprived of glucose and oxygen which can lead to dizziness and fainting
Name some factors which increase the risk of a heart attack?
High blood pressure, smoking as the carbon monoxide combines with the red blood cells preventing them from carrying as much oxygen
What can high fat diets and cholesterol do?
Block the arteries and cause heart attacks. Heart attacks are more likely with narrowed coronary arteries
What does healthy mean?
Being free from infection
What does fit mean?
How much physical activity you are capable of doing
What is cardiovascular efficiency?
How well your heart copes with aerobic exercise and how quickly it recovers after
