Plant Growth Flashcards
Name a plant hormone?
Auxin
What do plant hormones control?
Growth of shoots and roots and flowering and ripening of fruits
How does auxin affect the plants growth?
By responding to gravity (geotropism) and light (phototropism)
What happens to the shoots?
Grow towards light (positive phototropism) and against gravity (negative geotropism)
What happens to the roots?
Away from light (negative phototropism) and downwards towards gravity (positive geotropism) to absorb water
Where is auxin made?
In the shoot tip
What happens when light shines on a shoot?
The hormones in direct sunlight are destroyed, the hormones on the shady side continue to function causing them to elongate and the shoot bends towards the light
