States Of Matter / Flashcards
Solids
Fixed positions in a regular lattice arrangement. Vibrate about their fixed positions.
Liquids
Free to move past each other, but they do tend to stick together. The particles are constantly moving with random motion.
Gases
Free to move. The particles move constantly with random motion.
Solid to liquid
Liquid to solid
- Melting
2. Freezing
Solid to gas
Subliming
Liquid to gas
Gas to liquid
- Evaporating
2. Condensing
Simple distillation
Used for separating out a liquid from a solution. E.g. pure water from seawater
Fractional distillation
Used to separate a mixture of liquids. E.g. fractional distillation of crude oil
Filtration
Used to sperate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Pour your mixture in to a funnel with filter paper. The liquid part of the mixture runs through the paper, leaving behind a solid residue.
Crystallisation
Sperates a soluble solid from a solution
Chromatography
A method used to separate a mixture of soluble substances and identify them
Two phases of chromatography
- Mobile phase - where the molecules can move. This is always a liquid or a gas.
- Stationary phase - where the molecules can’t move. This can be sordid or a really thick liquid.
What is the stationary phase?
Piece of filter paper
What is the mobile phase?
A solvent
Water treatment
There are a number of sources of water which can be purified to provide us with potable water.
