Periodic Table Flashcards

1
Q

A
  • Mendeleev arranged atoms by mass, now we arrange by atomic number
  • Mendeleev used his table to predict properties, and spotted errors we can now explain

6
Q

Group is found by…

A

The last number in the electron configuration tells you which group the element is in
E.g. 2.8.7 Is in group 7 because it has 7 electrons in its outer shell

Q

Alkali metals

A
  • Alkali metal + water —> __________hydroxide + hydrogen
  • Alkali metals get more reactive as you go down the groups
  • All fizz/float in water as go further down move more and give out more heat
  • As you go down the outer electrons are further away from the nucleus so easier to remove

Q

Halogens

A
  • Halogen + metal —> metal halide
  • Halogens get less reactive as you down as it is harder to attract an extra electron
  • Hydrogen + halogen —> hydrogen halide
  • When hydrogen halides dissolve to form acids
