Anions
Ionic bonding
Positive ions attract negative ions because opposite forces attract.
• Electrostatic forces of attraction
What is an ion?
An atom or group of atoms with a charge
Structure of an ionic solid
Regular lattice of oppositely charged ions
How are metal ions formed?
Metals give away electrons to form + ions
How are non-metal ions formed?
Non-metals gain electrons to form - ions
Why don’t ionic substances conduct electricity as solids?
The ions can’t move and so can’t carry a charge
Why do ionic substances have high melting and boiling points?
Strong electrostatic attraction between ions
