States of consciousness/ sleep disorders/ drugs Flashcards
Preconscious
Thoughts & Feelings that we are not immediately aware of but we can recall it at will
Nonconscious
devoted to processes completely inaccessible to conscious awareness
Unconscious (subconscious)
Includes often unacceptable feelings, wishes, & thoughts not directly available to conscious
Dual processing
Processing info on conscious and unconscious at the same time
Unconsciousness
Loss of responsiveness to the environment resulting from disease, trauma or anesthsia
Consciousness
Awareness of the outside world and yourself
Circadian rhythm
“sleep/wake cycle” Operates on a 24-24 hour cycle and is controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus within the hypothalamus
What are the 2 main things sleep does?
1) protein creation and body repair throughout the body
2) Maintaining plasticity to consolidate info and integrate it with your stored memories
Awake is what type of waves
Beta waves
Relaxed is what type of waves
Alpha waves (the waves are slower)
Non-REM 1
Hypnotic, aware of stimuli, hallucination, jerks
Non-REM 2
Sleep spindles & K complexes, your brain slows
Non-REM 3
Deep sleep (delta waves)
- sleepwalking & talking
- night terrors
- breathing & heart rate ↓
- growth hormones ↑
REM sleep
The brain is active but the body is not heart rate and breathing, and blood pressure increases
- sleep cycle (12321 REM)*5
- 90min
Insomnia
Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
Treatment- Exercise, relaxation, sleep schedule etc
Narcolepsy
Sleep attacks throughout the day inability to stay awake
Treatment- Naps, drug therapy, meds
Sleep Apnea
Inability to get a good nights sleep because you stop breathing throughout the night
Treatment- Weight loss, sleep aid, positive pressure pump
Night terrors
Hight arousal and appearance of being terrified occur during Non REM 3 within 2-3 hours of falling asleep and are seldom remembered.
Treatment- Cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, relaxation therapy
Sleepwalking (somnambulism)
Childhood sleep disruption that occurs during sleep NREM-2 sleep characterized by trips out of bed or carrying on of complex activities
Treatment- antidepressants, anticipation awakenings, stress-reducing therapies
Substance use Disorder
Continued substance craving despite significant life disruption &/or physical risk
Psychoactive drugs
Chemical substance that alters perception and mood
Psychological dependence
you think you need drugs
Tolerance
The longer you have taken the drugs the more you need to produce the high
Physiological dependence
Need drugs to maintain homeostasis
Addiction
need drugs to feel “normal” to avoid withdraw
Depressant
Decrease the activity of the CNS and induce relaxation
Most common- Alchole and tranculisers
Narcotics
Pain reducers that depress the CNS and respiratory system
Stimulants
Increase CNS and motivational centers
Most common- caffein
Hallucinogens (psychedelics)
Alter moods, distort perception, and create sensory images without sensory input
