Q

What are the 4 main things that mass media portray about birth and pain? How many of these relate to humour? How?

A
  • A self-evident, indisputable fact
  • unavoidable except through pain medication (epidural)
  • its so bad it makes you want to die (humour in media emphasizes this)
  • it makes women (and their mothers) go mad - and sometimes turn violent to men. It causes women to break the social taboo (being polite etc), the humour adheres to this because it is the most culturally disapproved of.

Q

What is the problem with the “just entertainment idea” when it comes to the portrayal of birth in mass media?

A

there is a problem with this “just entertainment idea”, women actually watch a lot of reality tv shows and get an idea of what childbirth will be like. Women think that mass media provides ‘education’ on childbirth.

Q

What is an example of how childbirth is really trailing behind in terms of progressive representation in media?

A

sex education is very progressive in regards to sex but the show still represented childbirth in the same way as the holly wood representations. As soon as she goes to the hospital she gets put in a wheelchair and then what we see is a disaster, some type of near death experience. This tells us that childbirth is really trailing behind in term of our thinking and representation of it in the media.

Q

How can childbirth be compared to psychodelics?

A

childbirth is like psychodelics in some way because both experiences are really hard to describe. It’s ineffible. there’s a real mixture of emotions that is really hard to describe because we are used to saying that we have an emotion but there is a large mix of emotions in these experiences

Q

What are the big differences in perspectives on birth? AKA who holds which perspectives/why?

A
  • are not female vs not
  • are much more between people who have experienced and/or been present during a natural, intervention-free childbirth versus those who have not
17
Q

Is the male vs female perspective super different when it comes to childbirth?

A

the female vs male persepctive is not that different. What makes a difference is whether they have first hand experience with natural, intervention free childbirth.

a lot of hollywood representations are driven by people who have never seen natural births.

18
Q

Why do you think the traumatic portrayals of childbirth win awards?

A

the incentive of awards, and demontrating talent would be an aspect that encourages these portrayals of childbirth. If childbirht is in a film there will be incentive to not represent it accurately because it doesn’t make for very good tv.

19
Q

How do a lot of the videos involving epidural given to women during class over simplify the decision?

A

not really informed consent.

20
Q

How was the crazy clip about childbirth played in class different from most humour?

A
  • doctors are the punchline, they’re the bud of the joke. What was funny was not the mom, it was the practices of medicalized childbirth that are being made fun of.
  • All the other videos gave the impression that you were kind of learnign about the experience but this one was set up to be absurd
