Standard error Flashcards
standard error
a means to quantify how good a statistic is at representing the population
theoretical distributions
distributions that we dont typically produce or observe directly BUT we can still make estimates from the available data eg sampling distributions
sampling distribution
frequency distribution of any
statistic…… were we to repeatedly calculate it many times from a series of randomly drawn
samples from the same underlying population
the sampling distribution will always have the same characteristics
*same mean as population mean but narrower spread of scores
Formula for standard error of the mean
SD of sample / SQRT of sample size
what type of distribution is the sampling distribution of the mean
normal distribution
confidence intervals
putting an upper and lower bound around where we think the population mean is likely to be given our sample mean
68.3%
% of population that falls within +/- 1 SE
95%
standard level of confidence wanted
