Stages of Forming Questions Flashcards
❓ Stages of Forming Questions
As children develop language, they go through clear stages in learning how to ask questions—starting from tone changes to full grammatical structures.
1️⃣ Stage One – Rising Intonation
👶 Children ask questions by using rising intonation at the end of a statement, without changing word order.
Examples:
“Daddy go?”
“That mine?”
➡️ No auxiliary verbs yet — the question is shown only by voice.
2️⃣ Stage Two – Using Question Words
🧒 Children start to use question words like what, where, why, but may miss auxiliary verbs or use incorrect word order.
Examples:
“Where daddy go?”
“Why she crying?”
➡️ The structure is developing, but still non-standard.
3️⃣ Stage Three – Full Question Structures
👧 Children begin to use correct subject-verb inversion and auxiliary verbs, forming standard questions.
Examples;
‘joe is here’ becomes ‘is joe here’
“Where is Daddy going?”
“Why is she crying?”
“Can I have some?”
➡️ This stage shows a solid grasp of grammar and syntax
