Stages of Cognition Development Flashcards
stages of cognition development
The sensorimotor Stage (Birth to 2 Years)
* The preoperational Stage (About Ages 2 through 7)
* The Concrete Operation Stage (About Ages 7 through 11)
* The Formal Operational Stage (About Age 12 and Older)
The ________ stage is the period of development from birth through age two. During this initial phase of development, children utilize skills and abilities they were born with (such as looking, sucking, grasping, and listening) to learn more aboutthe environment.
Sensorimotor
During this substage, the child
understands the environment purely
through inborn _____ such as sucking and looking
reflexes (0-1 month)
This substage involves coordinating sensation and new schemas
Primary Circular Reactions (1-4 months)
children begin a period of trial and error experimentation during the fifth substage
Tertiary Circular Reactions (12-18 months)
Children begin to develop symbols to represent events or objects in the world in the final sensorimotor substage
Early Representational Thought (18-24 months)
Child begins to represent the world with words, images, drawings etc…
can form a stable concepts and begin to reaso
preoperational
pre
before
operational
logical thinking
preoperational thinking
thinking without logical rules
- can represent an object that is nopt present
- the child uses symbols to stand for action
SYMBOLIC FUNCTION/ PRECONCEPTUAL STAGE (2-4 YEARS OLD)
Know things but do not know how they work
become more social, less ego centric
they can’t further explain what they feel and see
INTUITIVE THOUGHT
(4-7 YEARS OLD)
several characteristics or features of pre operational
centration/conservation
egocentrism
symbolic representation
aminism
pretend or symbolic play
Children begin to think logically about Concrete events
Concepts attached to concrete situations. Time, space, and quantity
are understood and can be applied, but not as independent concepts.
Concrete operational
For example, if you pour water from a short, wide cup into a tall, thin glass, a child in the concrete operational stage will understand that the amount of water can be reserved by pouring it back into the original cup
