Describe the pre attachment stage
From 6 weeks old infants become attached to humans preferring them to objects and events. This can be demonstrated through smiling at peoples faces
Describe the indiscriminate attachment stage
Infants begin to discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar people smiling more at known people through they will allow stranger to handle and look after them
Describe the discriminate attachment stage
Infants begin to develop specific attachment staying close to particular people and becoming distressed when separated from them. They avoid unfamiliar people and protest if stranger try to hide them
Describe the multiple attachment stage
Infants form strong emotional ties with other major caregivers the fear of strangers weaken but attachment with the mother figure remains strongest
What age does pre attachment stage occur
Birth to 3 months
What age does indiscriminate attachment stage occur
3 to 7/8 months
What age does discriminate attachment stage occur
7/8 months onwards
What age does multiple attachment stage occur
9 months onwards
