What is maternal deprivation

A
  • disruption of the attachment bond due to separation o an infant from its mother
  • prolonged separations from their attachment figure before the age of 2 1/2 years
  • suffer serious and irrevocable damage and emotional, social and intellectual developments

- cling to aren’t to stop them

Despair - protesting stop and appear calmer also though still upset
- refuses others tempt for comfort
- seems withdrawn and disinterested

- reject caregiver on return
- show stronger signs of anger

what is the 44 juvenile thieves study

A

procedure:
- compared 44 juvenile thieves with a control of 44 children who where emotionally troubled but didnt show any antisocial behviour
- assed by psychologists and their parents were intervied by social workers about their early childhood

findings:
- 16 of the thieves where affectionless psychopaths while their was 0 affectionless psychopaths in control group
- 86% of the 16 affectionless psychopaths thieves had experienced early and prolonged (more than 6 months) seperations from their mothers
- 17% of remaining theives and 4% of the control group had experienced seperations

conclusion:
- link between early separations and later social and emotional maladjustment
- seperations lead to antisocial behviour eg theft and most severe cases, affectionless pychopathy

supporting research for short term effects - robertson and robertson

A

procedure:
- filmed and studied various children under the age of 3 during short seperation
- john aged 17 months stayed for 9 days in a residential nursery
- staff had little time to attend to his personal needs

found:
- behaviour over the 9 days = initially distressed(protest), upset throughout most of the stay, rejected his mum on the 9 th day(detachment)
- anxious when his mum collected him

long term effects:
- might recover if he does not experince seperation again
- separation left him full of anxiety
