- assed by psychologists and their parents were intervied by social workers about their early childhood
findings:
- 16 of the thieves where affectionless psychopaths while their was 0 affectionless psychopaths in control group
- 86% of the 16 affectionless psychopaths thieves had experienced early and prolonged (more than 6 months) seperations from their mothers
- 17% of remaining theives and 4% of the control group had experienced seperations
conclusion:
- link between early separations and later social and emotional maladjustment
- seperations lead to antisocial behviour eg theft and most severe cases, affectionless pychopathy
supporting research for short term effects - robertson and robertson
procedure:
- filmed and studied various children under the age of 3 during short seperation
- john aged 17 months stayed for 9 days in a residential nursery
- staff had little time to attend to his personal needs
found:
- behaviour over the 9 days = initially distressed(protest), upset throughout most of the stay, rejected his mum on the 9 th day(detachment)
- anxious when his mum collected him
long term effects:
- might recover if he does not experince seperation again
- separation left him full of anxiety
strength of maternal deprivation
real world replication
- bowlbys and the robertsons had impact on the way people thought about child rearing practises
- eg understanding of children needs following divorce and allowing parents to stay with children at hospital
