What is an intermediary?
The agency (in between the candidates and the client)
What is pre-screening?
Interviewing or checking applicants in advance to see if they are suitable for a particular vacancy.
What is a formal interview?
When the client interviews eligible candidates themselves.
What are permanent staff?
People employed long-term and indefinitely.
What are temporary staff?
People employed for only a set period of time (one week, month, year)
What are some advantages to recruitment agencies?
- Saves a hospitality business time and money by advertising vacancies.
- Specialist hospitality agencies have excellent knowledge of the industry, so they should be able to find people with the right skills.
- Agencies have an excellent knowledge of the labour market and will usually have suitable candidates on their books already.
- Saves a hospitality business time by pre-screening applicants and rejecting those who are not suitably qualified.
- Agency staff can be employed on a temporary basis to see if they can do the job, then employed on a permanent basis if they do well.
- If permanent staff do not work out, the agency may refund part of the fee, then look for a more suitable replacement.
What are some disadvantages to recruitment agencies?
- The fees agencies charge can be high – too expensive for some businesses.
- Some agencies might recommend unsuitable candidates, just to get a fee.
- Agencies may recommend suitable candidates, but the job may not be exactly what the candidate is looking for, so they may leave after a short time.
- Candidates employed might leave after a short time and the fee (or a part of the fee) is still payable.
- Hospitality businesses do not screen applicants themselves, so they will have to trust the agency.
- Agencies put candidates forward for more than one vacancy, so the person you like the best may choose another company instead.
