What happened to the workers’ life?
It was not great for the workers because speculators built cheap houses to rent to them close to the mills and factories. Most had only 2 rooms (one up and one down), had no running water and people had to share outdoor privies (toilets) with dozens of people
What are slums?
They are areas of very poor housing. In MC soot and fumes polluted the air,smelly rubbish lay everywhere, disease was rife, and children born there would die before the age of 5.

People grew wealthy so when the city became crowded they moved to its edges

- Manchester sold cloth but other countries sold it for cheaper
- Manchester couldn’t complete so they shut down
- people had to move to other places to find work
(the same thing happened to the other cities in the UK)

The city leaders had to regenerate the city
