always present
even when both eyes are open and attempting work together
Phoria
not always present
misalignment only occurs some of time
such as when synchronisation between eyes is broken by covering one eye
When child presents squint what must assess for
congenital glaucoma or cataract
retinoblastoma
Amblyopia
Partial or complete loss of vision in one eye caused by conditions that affect the normal development of vision. strabismus, = eyes are crossed inward (esotropia) or turned outward (exotropia)
anisometropia = major difference in refractive error between the two eyes from nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
Less common causes of amblyopia
ptosis
disease of the cornea (preventing light from entering the eye),
congenital cataract
injury to the eye of a young child.
patch good eye until visual system matures (<10 year yo)
2 hours per day for 2 year old
Foster Kennedy syndrome
contralateral disc swelling and ipsilateral optic atrophy due to optic nerve compression - local meningioma
