What are the 2 types of squint?
Concomitant vs Paralytic
What is the cause of a concomitant squint?
An extraocular muscle imabalance.
What is the cause of a paralytic squint?
It is due to paralysis of extraocular muscles.
What are the 2 types of concomitant squint and which is more common?
Convergent and Divergent.
Convergent squints are more common
What test can you can do to detect a squint?
The corneal light reflection test - hold a light 30cm from the child’s face to see if the light reflects summetrically on the pupils
Once a squint is detected, what test can you do to figure out what type of concomitant squint it is?
The Cover Test
Ask the child to focus on an object and cover one eye. Observe movement of the uncovered eye. Then cover the other eye and repeat the test.
What is the management of a squint?
Refer to secondary care.
Eye patches and potentially surgery.
