Q

Describe the difference between dry and wet age related macular degeneration.

A
  • Dry macular degeneration - characterised by:
    • Drussen which form in the layer called the RPE (retinal pigment epithelium).
    • Many people have drussen but in dry macular degeneration there are many and they are large.
    • RPE then atrophies and there is a loss of vision from loss of photoreceptors in the macula.
  • Wet macular degeneration - characterised by:
    • Choroidal neovascularisation - these are new blood vessels in the retina are fragile and leak serous fluid and blood below the macula.
    • This can result in a rapid loss of vision.

Q

Describe the updated classification for age related macular degeneration.

  • Late age related macular degeneration (neovascularisation, exudative)
