Squatter Settlements Flashcards
Squatter Settlement
People are living there illegally and do not own the land, they provide housing for many of the world’s poorest people and are constructed with poor materials initially, including plastic sheeting, wood and cardboard, they often lack proper sanitation, water supply, electricity or telephone services
What causes squatter settlements?
Fast urbanisation, causing large amounts of rural to urban migration quickly, and houses can’t be built in time to meet the demand
Self Help Schemes
Local and national government sponsored schemes which encourage people to improve the settlement themselves (loans and grants)
Site and Service Schemes
Help improve infrastructure and housing by dividing the land into plots
Advantages of self help schemes
Stay with their family- quality of life
Disadvantages of self help schemes
Could object to interference
The site can expand, meaning that more need the help
