Global Inequalities Flashcards
What can environmental factors be split into?
Climate hazards and climate related diseases
Examples of climate hazards?
Droughts, floods, earthquakes etc
Examples of climate related diseases?
Malaria
Why do environmental hazards stop development?
People stay poor (lost agriculture or ill), can’t go shopping, fewer jobs, no food as they can’t afford it, have little energy, can’t work, kids have little energy, can’t go to school, poor qualifications, low income, stay poor
What does economic factors include?
Trade patterns, LIC dependence on primary products, interdependence, debt
What’s the problem with trade patterns?
Favour HICs , who determine the market
Why do trade patterns stop countries developing?
Sell low value products, small profit, buy back high value products with the little profit they made, don’t have enough money to spend on other things
Advantages of relying on one primary product?
Specialised, less expense- only one type of machinery needed, passed on through generations
Disadvantages of relying on one primary product?
Price can fall, no say in global price, crop failure, trends change, recycling of materials like metals reduces market size
Why do LICs have such a large amount of debt?
Took out large loans in the 70s, high interest rates mean they can’t afford to repay it, figure increases as they can’t afford to repay
Problems of LIC debt?
Education being denied as parents have to pay so the government can use the money to repay the debt, charities give them less than the repayments are, children are starving
What are the 4 social factors?
Water availability, water quality, health, education
Why’s there an increased demand for water?
Higher populations, more businesses, higher incomes= dishwashers etc, tourism
Advantages of using rivers as a water supply
Free, easily accessible, large rivers have a reliable flow
Disadvantages of using rivers as a water supply?
Contaminated, smaller rivers dry up
