SPT - Deindivuation Flashcards
Define deindividuation
A psychological state in high an individual loses their personal identity + tasks on the identity of a social group e.g wearing a uniform
The result may be the decreased concern about the evaluation of others
We r all capable of behaving in agg ways that we never would on our own
crowd behaviour
Bon explained concept that the behaviours of individuals in crowds because we are easily identified by others - our behaviour is contained by social norms
When part of a crowd what happens to us according to this theory?
We lose our sense of responsibility/restraint
Deindividuation + aggression
People in group encourage each other as have same goals
Zimbardo distinguished
Between individuated + deindividuated behaviour
Individ - rational/normative+ follow social norms
Deindividuated state - emotional/irrational/impulsive/anti-normative
What do the conditions of dein promote?
Agg beh - darkness/drugs/alcohol/masks/disguises
Major factor of anonymity
We have less fear of retribution as we r unidentifiable + part of a faceless crowd
The bigger the crowd the more anonymous we r
Reduced self-awareness researchers
Dunn + rogers
Private self -awareness
How we pay attention to our own feelings + beh.
Reduced when we r a part of a crowd
Our attention becomes focused ourtwardly to events around us so we pay less attention to beliefs + feelings
Public self-awareness
Extent to which we care abut what otjer people think of our beh
Reduced In crowds
We realise we r just one indivual amongst many
We r anonymous + our beh is less likely to b judged by others
Research on deinidividuation - David dodd
229 psych students in 13 classes and asked if you could do anything humanly possible with complete assurance that your would not be held responsible what would you do?
Anonymous responses
Dodd found 36% responses involved antisocial behaviour
26% were criminal acts (rob a bank)
Few = murder/rape + assaination of political figure
Only 9% were prosocial so helping someone
Research support
Douglas + McCarty - agg online behaviour in chat rooms + instant messaging
Found strong correlation between anonymity + flaming
Found most agg messages were sent bathhouse who hid identity
Support link between anonymity + agg beh
Limitation
Gergen et al - strangers in dark room for 1 hour
Coul do what ever they liked, they couldn’t identify with each other + would never meet again
Stopped talking ans starting kissing/touching each other
Second study and told participants they would see each other after
Kissing etc was lower
Shows deindividuation doesn’t always lead to agg
Limitation (nurture)
Favours nurture side as focuses on environmental aspect
Need to see nature bio/gen
Disregards
Limitation (normative)
De in argues rear we behave in ways that r contracts to social norms when we r less aware of our priv identity
Spears and lea argue the deindividuation leads to behaviour that conforms to group norms
Happens because anonymity shifts an individuals attention from his or her priv identity to their social identity as a group member
Suggests people in a de-individuated state remain sensitive to norms rather than ignoring them
