SLT Flashcards
How is agg learnt according to bandura?
-agg is learnt in social context
-slt doesn’t deny biological factors play a role in acquiring agg behaviours but the main factor is that agg is learnt
Direct learning
When someone directly experiences consequences of behaviour (pos/neg reinforcement)
Indirect learning
When someone learns the consequences of a behaviour through others
Watching someone else being rewarded or punished for a behaviour
Observational learning
Child may learn agg behaviour through observing agg role models such as parents/siblings/friends/media
Vicarious reinforcement
If a model’s use of agg to achieve a goal is punished an observing child is less likely to imitate behaviour
Meditational processes
Attention to agg
Retention (remembering agg)
Motor reproduction (transfers mental rep of agg into physical)
Motivation (reason to motivate agg beh)
Self efficacy
Extent to which we believe our actions will achieve a desired goal
Childs confidence in ability to be agg grows as they learn agg can bring rewards
Strength of slt
Supporting research
Poulin + bolvin found agg boys between 9-12 were friends with other agg boys
Friendships reinforced each boys agg behaviour through modelling
Provides r/s for role of obs learning g + vicarious reinforcement in onset of agg beh
Strength of slt (reduce)
Can help reduce agg
Kids imitate when observe being rewarded for any beh + especially when they identify with them
One way to rescue is to reward non agg models to encourage kids to
Slt offers practical steps to reduce development of agg beh in kids
Limitation of slt
Underestimates influence of biological factors
Bandura recognised role of biology cause he accepted the is an urgent to be agg that us instinctive in nature
But was equally clear that the form of agg is learnt + outcome is nurture
Despite this their r powerful bio explanations of agg
Slt acknowledges these but doesn’t explain
Slt is an incomplete explanation of agg as it underplays role of biological factors
Limitation of slt experiment
Bono doll has low mundane realism results could have been affected by dc
Social desireabillty bias e.g purpose of ex was to hit doll aggressively kids may have dine what was expected
Influence of modelling imitation +mediational processes maybe slight in case of agg
Slt may be a limited explanation
Bandura et al’s research
-kids observed adult assaulting bobo doll (throwing/kicking/hitting/verbal outbursts)
-short period - kids weren’t allowed to play with attractive toys that caused frustration
-taken to another room with a bobo doll
-without being instructed to thy imitated the behaviour of adults
-direct copy of phrases etc
-boys imitated more physical agg
-boys were more likely to imtate same sex adult
-also another group didn’t show any agg when saw adults showing no agg
