Media Influences Flashcards

Excessive tv viewing
Robertson et al - measures tv viweing of over 1000 New Zealanders at reg intervals till 26
Found that time spent watching tv in childhood + adolescence was a reliable predictor of agg beh in early adulthood
According to r’s - excessive time spent watching tv is associated with reduced social interactions + poorer educational achievement
Violent film content
Most significant media influence on agg beh
Bandura et al - replication of bobo doll from kids due to watching adults being agg
Tv/film effects not strong
Negative effects of film violence r not as string as often assumed
Pain + cornstock - meta analysis of about 200 studies
Found a significant correlation between viewing film violence + antisocial beh
Found film violence only accounted for between 1 - 10% of variance in kids aggressiveness
Plays minor role
Computer games
Growing evidence that computer games may have more powerful effects than traditional screen based media
- player takes more active role compared to relatively passive viewer
- game-playing is more direct;y rewarding for player
+ reinforcement
Lab
-bartholow + Anderson - task for p’s to punish opponents with white noise
Found students who played a violent comp game (tcrtt) for 10 minutes selection higher volumes of white noise than students who played non violent (pga tour)
More likely to be agg when played comp game
Correlational studies
-common findings is that several measures of agg r positively correlated with tike spent playing violent games
-Matt de lisi argues link between agg and computer violence ages should be considered health Issue (hiv)
Potential underlying mechanisms
Desensitisation
Disinhibtion
Cognitive priming
Limitation - agg defined in diff ways
-the dependent variable in research studies is violent behaviour (DeLisi et al), it is also volume of white noise blasted at an opponent (Bartholow and Anderson) and criminal convictions (Robertson et a)
-All violence is aggression, but not all aggression is violence and not all aggression or violence is necessarily criminal. The effects found in studies depend very much on how aggression is defined so hard to compare
Limitation (correlations)
-Correlations cannot establish cause + establish
-Some research studies are poor quality, meaning the analysis will also be poor quality
-Experimental studies lack external validity so researches may be guilty pf drawing inaccurate conclusions questioning accuracy
Strength slt
Anderson et al - exposure to kids violence can be harmful
Kids more likely to imitate agg beh
Shown in bobo doll
Lim - issues/debates
