Springs Flashcards
What does Hooke’s Law state?
the force need to stetch a spring is directly propotional to the extension of the spring from its natural length F = K ΔL
up to the limit of proportionality
What is K?
the spring constant aka the stiffness constant
the greater the K the stiffer the spring is
measured in N m-1
What is the elastic limit?
if a spring is stretched beyond its elastic limit, it does not regain its initial length when the force applied to it is removed
What does the weight of spring in parallel equal?
W = F1 + F2 = K1ΔL + K2ΔL = KΔL
What is the equation for total extension of two springs in series?
ΔL = ΔL1 + ΔL2 = W / K1 + W / K2 = W / K
What is the effective spring constant for two springs in parallel?
K = K1 + K2
What is the effective spring constant for springs in series?
1 / K = 1 / K1 + 1 / K2
What is the equation for the elastic potential energy stored in a stretched spring?
EP = 1/2 F ΔL = 1/2 K ΔL2
