force and acceleration Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law at motion?
objects either stay at rest or move with constant velocity unless acted on by a force
How can this be investigated?
dynamics trolley
motion sensor connected to a computer, display graph of velocity changesd
pulled along sloping runway using one or more elastic bands stretched to same length
What would the graph show?
pulling trolley with a constant force, the velocity -time graph should show thaat the velocity increases at a constant rate
the acceleration is therefore constant
What does this tell us about force?
it is propotional to mass x acceleration
this equation is known as Newton’s second law for constant mass
What is weight?
the force exerted due to the acceleration of gravity
w = mg
What is g referred to as?
gravitational field strength at agiven position
What is the mass of an object a measure of?
inertia - resistance to change of motion
more force is needed to give an object a certain acceleration than to give an object with less mass the same acceleration
