which then go on to create and enviroment for lactobacilli and non strept. mutans strep
What bacteria is involved in periodontal diease?
Anaerobes e.g. spirochetes such as treponema denticola
What are some LOCAL factors that have an effect on the ammount or path of spread of bacteria?
- anatomical site
- mucosal barriers
- local immune response e.g. acute inflammation
What are some SYSTEMIC factors that have an effect on the ammount or path of spread of bacteria?
- AGE
- STRESS
- PREGNANCY

- DRUG THERAPY
What is Cellulitis?
Cellulitis
Diffuse inflammation of the soft tissues which is not circumscribed or confined to one area but tends to spread through tissue spaces along fascial planes
What are the 3 potential Fascial Tissue Planes?
Primary Maxillary space
Primary Mandibular space
Cervical Fascial space
What is the first of the primary maxillary space?
Canine space
clinically you will get an inra orbital swelling
What happens when an infra temporal space is created due to spread of infection?
rare but serious infaction
Usually upper 8
• Clinically:
- severe trismus
- bulging of temoralis
- cavernous sinus thrombosis
What happens when an Submental space is created due to spread of infection?
(Primary mandibular space)
Usually Lower incisors
Clinically:
Firm swelling under chin
Discomfort on swallowing
When do you refer onto a medic?
Rapidly progressing infection
- Difficulty in breathing
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Involvement of fascial tissue spaces
- Temp > 39ºC
- Severe trismus
- Compromised host defences
- Infection not responding to Rx
