Floor of Mouth and Tongue Flashcards

1
Q

What are the boundaries of the oral cavity?

A
  1. Anterior - alveolar/dental arches of mandible & maxilla
  2. Posterior - oropharangeal isthmus - space bounded laterally by palatoglossal folds
  3. Roof - hard palate & soft palate
  4. Floor - tongue, muscles of floor of mouth

Q

What is the functions of the tongue?

A
  • formation of a food bolus
  • pushing away food bolus to the posterior part of the oral cavity ready to be swalloed
  • keeping the mouth clean
  • speech
  • tasting & sensing the food

Q

What do intrinsic muscles of the tongue do?

A

intrinsic muscles act to alter the shape of the tongue

  • longitudinal muscles: make tongue short & thick
  • transverse & vertical muscles: make tongue long & narrow

Q

What are all tongue muscles innerveated by except the palatoglossus?

A

ALL tongue muscles supplied by CN XII except palatoglossus (muscle of palate supplied by CN X)

Q

What is the CLINICAL TESTING OF CN XII, HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE?

A

Ask your patient to ‘stick their tongue straight out’

  • If both CN XIIs are normal, the tongue tip should stick out and remain in the midline
  • If one CN XII is damaged, the tongue tip will point towards the side of the injured nerve
