What is the Meninges?
Meninges = protective coverings for the brain & spinal cord
What are the three layers of membrane meninges from superficial to deep?
•DURA MATER
–innervated (pain) & vascular
–2 layers (periosteal & meningeal)
•ARACHNOID MATER
–arachnoid granulations (reabsorb CSF)
•PIA MATER
–coats brain and the blood vessels/nerves entering/leaving brain
What is the dura layer separating the 2 hemisphere lobes?
falx cerebri
What arterys enter the cranial cavity through the foramen magnum?
vertebral artery
Label all the artieries in the circle of willis
Label all the dural venous sinuses
What veins are seponsible for returning venous blood from brain tissue to sinus?
cerebral veins
What are the Cranial Nerves Modalities (types of nerves)?
-Somatic sensory nerves
- from skin, mucosa, fascia, bone, skeletal muscle
- e.g. mental nerve
-Somatic motor nerve
- to skeletal muscle
- e.g. spinal accessory
-Parasympathetic nerve
- autonomic nervous system (motor) – rest and digest
- e.g. to glands (mucous/lacrimal/salivary)
-Special sensory
- from special sense organs
- e.g. optic nerve
-Mixed
- contains a mix of any of the above
- e.g. CNV – trigeminal (somatic sensory and somatic motor)
-Visceral sensory (afferent)
- from carotid body/sinus, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, heart, GI tract
- Glossopharyngeal and Vagus nerves
What cranial nerves are in the Anterior cranial fossa?
CNs I
What cranial nerves are in the middle cranial fossa?
