Sprains and Strains -Butcher Flashcards
Dr Butcher assured us that these questions would be easy... so dont stress...
Biomechanical Model of Ligament/tendon Injury says:
Acute injury occurs when a ligament or tendon is subjected to tensile stress (load) that exceeds it’s tensile strength.
Overuse injury occurs when ligament or tendon is subjected to repetitive tensile stress at a frequency, duration, and intensity that exceed its capacity for recovery or repair.
What factors can keep you from finding the endpoint in a ligament you are examining?
Muscle tone Muscle guarding Joint effusion Soft tissue swelling Mechanical block Ligamentous endpoint
Initial sprain/strain treatment?
P Protection R active Rest I intermittent Ice C Compression E Elevation M anti-inflammatory Medication M anti-inflammatory Modalities
3 degrees of sprains?
Grade 1: Micro-tears (stretch)
Grade 2: Macrotears (partial tear)
Grade 3: Complete disruption
What is functional instability?
Described as “giving out”
Unable to perform things like: jumping, pivoting, decelerating quickly
What is active rest?
Getting joint moving as soon as possible with precautions:
Activity is performed in a biomechanically normal position
Protected from abnormal motion
No pain with activity
No pain or swelling after activity
