Sports Psychology (personality) - Mr Manley Flashcards
What is a personality?
A unique psychological makeup.
what is the trait theory?
we are born with innate characteristics called traits. they are stable, consistent and enduring. it attempts to profile the individual.
What is the social learning approach?
suggests behaviour is learned from significant others by socialisation. we learn from people we hold in high esteem. e.g. role models, friends, parents, teachers etc…
what is the interactionist perspective?
A theory which combines trait and social learning to predict behaviour in a specific situation.
indicates that born traits are adapted according to the situation.
What is the interactionist perspective formula?
B=F(PxE)
behaviour is a function of personality and environment.
what does the hollander approach to interactionist theory suggest?
it suggests that personality is made up of 3 features:
- the core of the performer
- Typical responses
- Role related behaviour.
what is the core of an individual?
the values and beliefs of the individual.
what are typical responses?
the use of inherent traits displayed to specific situations.
what is role related behaviour?
suggests that a performer may adapt or adopt a very specific role when the situation demands.
what is a credulous approach?
you believe the theories. You accept a link that a personality can predict behavour.
what is a sceptical approach when predicting behaviour?
You don’t believe them. You doubt the link that personality can predict behaviour.
How can the Interactionalist Perspective improve performance? 5 ways….
- the coach could predict potential aggressive or unacceptable behaviour- they could remove the player before a sending off occurs.
- coach could recreate these situations during training to allow the player to become accustomed to them in games. A nervous performer could train infront of a crowd.
- the coach could try to change the player behaviour by encouraging the player to adapt to circumstances. Calm the anxious player before they take a penalty.
- if a player understands their behaviours they can monitor and adapt themselves.
- core values may be hard to alter so need to be reinforced by significant others ie; coach or captain.
What are the 3 ways to measure personality?
- questionnaire
- observation
- interview
