Sports Medicine Lecture Powerpoint Flashcards
Sports medicine definition
Umbrella for area of medicine related to physically active and sports population including many populations of physically active individuals across age groups
Cardinal signs of inflammation (4)
- rubor (erythema)
- tumor (swelling)
- calor (warmth)
- dolar (pain)
Bursitis
Inflammation of bursa sac, overuse or traumatic, see swelling and tenderness in area of bursa, usually treated simply with supportive care or aspiration
DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
Common in athletes especially with overexertion, can be confused with strain, usually peaks 24-48 hrs post activity, doesn’t need treatment other than rest and NSAIDS as is self limiting
Importance of getting an axillary view as one of the 4 views when getting a shoulder radiograph
Can miss significant posterior shoulder dislocation or corocoid fracture
Little leager’s elbow
Apophysitis of medial epicondyle due to repetitive microtrauma of overuse injury
Ulnar collateral ligament injuries are from ___ injury to the elbow
Valgus
Terrible triad
- ebow dislocation
- radial head fracture
- coronoid fracture
-unstable injury often needing surgical compare
Stener lesion
Displacement of ligament by the adductive aponeurosis in skier’s thumb, can only be identified by MRI, doesn’t heal on own and needs surgery to fix
Femoroacetabular impingement
Impingement of proximal femur on acetabulum, repetitive microtrauma leading to labral tear and hip degenerative changes, treated with conservative therapy and excision of any lesions
Segond fracture
Avulsion fracture of the lateral tibial plateau highly associated with ACL tear, if seen on x ray should have high clinical suspicion
Spondylolysis characteristic finding on x ray
Scottie dog sign
Concussion signs and symptoms (6)
- Headaches
- dizziness
- vision changes
- fatigue
- memory problems
- all following direct blow to head causing rapid head movements
(T/F) you have to lose consciousness in order for it to be considered a concussion
False!!!!
Concussion physical exam
-Neuro exam (CN, balance testing, sensory exam, coordination, cognitive screening)
