What are the features found in a group?

What is collective identity?
It is when a team can be recognised easily as they are wearing the same uniform or colours
What does collective identity develop and why is this good?
It develops affiliation and this creates motivation and belonging
What is interaction?
It is the way players work together to complete a task
What are example characteristics of interaction?
Are the players loud or quiet, are they playful or serious
What is communication?
Is it non verbal or verbal communication. Are there coded plays
What is the advantage of a shared goal or purpose?
Achieving a shared goal/target helps to bind people together so they commit to each other and work hard to achieve the goal and so this raises motivation
What are the two types of cohesion?
Task and social cohesion
What is task cohesion?
It is results based and outcome based
What is social cohesion?
It is about working together and the interaction of the players
What are the concepts of group formation?
Forming
Storming
Norming
Performing
What is forming?
It is getting to know each other, strengths/weaknesses and knowing if people will fit in
What starts to happen during forming?
The players begin to develop social relationships
They are reliant on the coach to bring the group together at this stage
They begin to figure out the goal
What is storming?
It is when there infighting and conflict as people establish positions/roles
What can happen during storming?
There may be confrontation with the leaders
What is norming?
The conflicts during storming are resolved
What happens during norming?
The team begins to unify and cooperate focusing on achieving goals
Standards/norms are accepted and the cohesion of the team develops
Motivation and success rise
What is performing?
Common goals, success, team support each other and understand their roles
What happens during performing?
Motivation and enjoyment is high
Respect for other members and leaders is high
How does the time taken in each stage of group formation differ?
Settled teams accept new players quickly during the forming stage whereas representative teams take longer
