SPO5: Plant Diversity II Flashcards
Naked Seed
Gymnosperm.
Seed not surrounded by ovule
Redwoods firs, pines, cycads, junipers, conifers, etc.
The flowering plants
Angiosperms
Multiple agents of pollination (air, water, other animals,)
An ovary houses the ovule in a fruit
A dormant embryo embedded in nutritive tissue
Seed
The nutritive tissue of the seed that acts as a food storage for the developing plant embryo, usually containing starch with protien and other nutrients.
Endosperm
Found in the pollen grain produces the sperm
Male gametophyte
Held in the ovule of the sporophyte, produces the egg
Female gametophyte
Dominant stage of life for seed plants
Sporophyte
Develops in the gametophyte
Embryonic sporophyte
Seed housed in a mature ovary
Fruit
houses male and female components
Flower
Has microsporangium which produces microspores, which produces sperm
Anther
Produces megasporangium which produces the egg

What kind of gymnosperm is this?
Ginko
Produced by pollen grain. Releases sperm nucleus to fuse with egg nucleus.
